About us
Welcome to our website! Up north Sami adventures is a family company, and it's built around our life and culture. Through our company, we let you in on our everyday life, and also the bigger events of the Sami life.

Who are we?
The founder of Up north Sami adventures is Ira Máre & Johan Ánte Bæhr. We are married, and live in Kautokeino together with our dogs, and reindeer herd. But since family is in the center of the Sami culture, and our company reflects that, you might very well encounter some of our family members when you visit us.
In the reindeer work everyone needs to be hands on! So everyone from grandparents to young children are part of it! Also in our culture dogs are very important.
Herding dogs help us with the reindeers, and hunting dogs help with finding food and tracking. Everyone play an important role, and therefor our community is very close. And together we keep the traditional Sami culture alive.

Our history
Our family have always lived in Kautokeino, and been reindeer herders as long as anyone remembers. The herd is passed on through generations, and Johan Ánte took over the herd from his father almost ten years ago. Some say his first sentence was that one day he was going to be a reindeer herder just like his father.
This is a job for life, and the work schedule is determined by the herd, the wind and time of year. And we move with our herd through the arctic tundra two times a year. In spring time we move from our home in Kautokeino to the coast in northern Troms. And when the fall is over, and winter times are lurking around the corner, we move again over the tundra and to our home and winter grazing lands. These moves have always been part of the culture, and therefor the Sami people are nomadic people. We follow the herd.
